Sustainability and Biomass flows in the Bioeconomy

This part of the pillar consists in the development of a database tool to collect published data on ecological, environmental and socio-economical impacts. The objective was to gather a set of “eco-profiles” for relevant bioprocesses and provide the user with the opportunity to consult existing sustainability data of a series of biobased products in one click. See a snapshot of the prototype tool below.
The products featured in this prototype database are chosen for their relevance to the BIO-TIC project: they are generated through industrial biotech processes and illustrate the five business cases.

- Analysis of the use of renewable raw materials in Europe – Bioobservatory
In order to correctly assess biomass use in Europe, the BIO-TIC project complements the work carried out by the JRC for the Bioobservatory. The JRC is currently collecting extensive data from the European industry to establish the amounts of biomass used in industrial processes. However, BIO-TIC uses a different approach : based on existing information from diverse European databases, the project partners calculate these amounts by using the “total biomass flow” and “biobased share” methodologies which they developed.
