Action Plan for Industrial Biotech
The BIO-TIC objective is to perform a reality-check on what is hampering the development of industrial biotechnology in the EU, and find ways to address the issues.
The project focuses on five product categories which have been identified to have significant potential for growing the European industrial biotechnology market: biopolymers, biobased chemical building blocks, biosurfactants, advanced biofuels (cellulosic ethanol and aviation fuels) and CO2 as a feedstock for industrial biotechnology processes.
The list of bottlenecks and required solutions to these has been examined, tested and supplemented by a large body of EU stakeholders during one-to-one interviews and a series of dedicated workshops throughout Europe.
There are three dimensions to the nature of these issues:
- Market size, opportunities and value chain structure, reviewed in the market roadmap
- Research and development needs, reviewed in the technological roadmap
- Political and regulatory issues, reviewed in the non-technological roadmap
These three roadmaps will be merged into one single blueprint document outlining an action plan for a growing industrial biotechnology sector in Europe. The integrated roadmap is due to be published in July 2015.
